Sicko

We received a bill yesterday for my ambulance ride way back in November. The bill was for $611. I called the fire department billing department, and asked if they had billed my insurance; we have full coverage with Blue Cross- Blue Shield, surely an emergency ambulance ride in the middle of the night should be covered.
They told me that the insurance company paid $17, and that my copay was $611. So I called Blue Cross- Blue Shield and very politely asked them if they had mixed up my copay and their payment. They told me no, the fire department was an "out-of-network provider," and as such, not covered under the almost $3000 deductible we had paid last year while I was pregnant. As such, I would be required to pay for all but $17 of my ambulance ride. Apparently, while I was having a seizure, unable to walk, talk or control my body in any way, I was supposed to check with the fire department first, to make sure they were part of the Blue Cross network. God Bless America.
Speaking of which, Bryan and I watched "Sicko," this evening.
I don't care if you are a conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat or completely uninterested in politics altogether, but you really should watch this film. If nothing else, it will make you think about the American health care system and just how absolutely ridiculous it really is.
Meanwhile, Bryan and I are investigating moving to Europe.
