Okay, neither Bryan nor I have decided who we are voting for yet. We are not working on any of the campaigns, and neither he nor I are a spokesman for any of the candidates, obviously.
However, there are some troubling emails circulating, and I've had a few discussions with some folks as of late, and I feel the need to say something:
Barack Obama DOES salute the flag, and he DOES say the pledge of allegiance.
Barack Obama was sworn in on the Bible, not the Koran.
Barack Obama, is not, nor has he ever been a Muslim; he is a member of the United Church of Christ, a non-denominational Christian Church.
Now here's the deal folks, you may not like what I have to say. Why would being a Muslim make someone incapable of being a good president?
Muslims are not the enemy. The Islamic Fundamentalists who are members of Al Quaeda, the people who flew airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, the people who we are fighting in Afghanistan now, they are the enemy. Their interpretation of the Koran could be compared to the KKK's interpretation of Bible.
Faithful Muslims, who are the VAST majority, are not terrorists. And when I say vast majority, compare this to how many Christians in America are not members of the KKK...then multiply it by, oh 1000. At least.
(I'd love to take credit for this analogy, but in fact, it comes from "The West Wing, Abraham & Ishmael")
Furthermore, (and remember, I am a Christian) we have in this country a thing called the separation of powers. You are allowed to use whatever basis upon which to judge how you will vote, that is the beauty of living in a free democracy. But when you are evaluating the candidates, please remember that there is a reason we have a separation of church and state, and it is a very good one. For the same reason that you don't want someone telling you which God to believe in and when and where you can and cannot pray, no more should we be doing that to our leaders in government.
Also, if we are going to take a hard-nosed stand on the whole "saluting the flag" business, then let's get all the facts out there. The phrase "Under God," was added by Congress at the urging of President Eisnhower in response to fear of a Communist threat, it has not always been there.
Commandment Four of the 10 in Exodus 20 says "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth below. Thou shall not bow down to them or worship them..."
I'm not saying we are bowing down to the flag. But we are "pledging allegiance" to it. One could argue (and many have) that to pledge allegiance to the flag, a symbol of American Nationalism is the same thing as bowing down, and in essence, those who are followers of both the Christian and Jewish faiths would be, in essence, breaking the fourth commandment by pledging allegiance.
I cannot tell you how many times we went 'round and 'round in my political theory classes at college, discussing this very issue.
Now, I salute the flag. Some don't. And they have that right, and to exercise that right is the very foundation of what it is to be American, thanks to the First Amendment.
Choosing to not salute the flag does not make you a bad American.
Finally, our forefathers were not all devout Christians; Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were Agnostics. Thomas Jefferson, for example, actually re-wrote the Bible, taking all miraculous events OUT. I'm just saying.
Sorry my panties are all up in a twist. But when people start calling me and telling me things that are just plainly un-true, I have to respond. I may be home on poopy patrol right now, but I am a history teacher after all.
Okay, I'll get off my soap box now. I promise to return to much friendlier topics tomorrow.

Hey... your blog, your rules, YOUR TOPICS. Good points brought up... and important ones to consider as we try to wade through the muck of political ads and debates in the serious business of choosing our next president.
Also... have you read the book Three Cups of Tea? If not... read it. Couldn't put it down. One of the main ideas is that to fight terrorism, what really needs to happen (instead of just dropping bombs and obliterating people) is to offer the poorest Pakistani and Afghani children a balanced, moderate education to counterbalance the madrassas that have become prevalent in the regions.
You need to remember to keep the main thing the main thing. How does this fit into your faith and is it distancing you from your relationship with God? If so, you need to rethink it a little. He is the main thing and I believe the false idols was meant for things like other symbols of Gods (tangible statues), money, possessions, etc. Also, in my opinion, you choose to live in this country then salute the flag. Or think about leaving. I am sure other countries would welcome these people with open arms.
I welcome your comment, and your discussion. I find it interesting that you feel entitled to criticize
behind the veil of anonymity, however.
My question to you is, what is it you believe is distancing me from my faith in God? My discussion of politics? The two are not mutually exclusive, nor are the two intertwined.
And how is that you, a reader of a blog, know what is my personal relationship with God? Do you know me? If so, put your name down, friend. Let's really have a debate.
If you don't know me, then you don't know me, and you don't know my relationship with God, nor is it really something I need to defend to "anonymous."
Why should someone who chooses not to salute the flag leave this country? I guess the 1st amendment only applies to those people who stay in line. Joe McCarthy would be so proud.
I cannot tell you how much I agree with you on this post! It seriously could have been me writing it. And wow, I have SO much to say to "anonymous" but I'm really trying not to take the bait. It's hard.
It seems to me that "anonymous" forgets that many of the people who choose not to salute the flag would, in fact, NOT be welcomed by many other countries with open arms. While there are democracies around the world, many still insist that residents salute their governments and symbols of nationality.
Wow! You moms are really upset that I signed as anonymous. I think you both need to calm down. If you notice you are asked to sign in using a google id or use a nickname. I do not have either and I am not inclined to sign up for them, so calm down. This time I will tell you who I am... Are you ready, now you can put a face to your anger, it's me Chris Scheer.
So to answer your question. Yes Steph, I think I do know a little of where you are at in your walk with the Lord. I was not attacking in any way, I just reminded you to keep the main thing the main thing. I think that is important. You have to remember that alot of things about our faith don't make sense and that is why it is called "having faith." God and Jesus and his death and resurrection don't make sense, but we have to choose whether we are going to believe or not. And yes, I think if your thoughts on politics are influencing your faith and not the other way around, it is time to evaluate them. I love you and only want the best, so calm down and realize I thought your topic was interesting and so I commented. Talk to you soon, Chris
WOW!! Chris I don't know you very well I only met you once, but I do know that what you have wrote to my sister is very hurtful and really none of your business. My sisters walk with God is just that hers. She shouldn't have to defend it on a public blog like this. She also has a degree in political science from a Christian college. That being said if you think her views on politics are wrong then why would they offer it as a degree at a CHRISTIAN college? Having a
view on politics has nothing to do with religion. Oh yea and way to pick on moms you are just really wanting to make people mad. No one needs to calm down you should have just had the guts to say who you where if you where going to attack peoples views in such a way!!!!!!
Sara
sorry this is so long Steph
