There's a Reason why they call is "Practicing" Medicine: Our first OB visit

So I went to my first official OB appointment today, where I was suppossed to get all my tests done, ultrasound etc. Of course, my doc doesn't have an ultrasound machine, and the earliest they could get me in is not until Monday, in Tacoma.
Then she did the physical exam (always a joy) and said she couldn't quite tell much b/c my uterus is tilted. (sorry if this is TMI) Then she felt my tummy and said I look and feel like I'm closer to 20 weeks, either that or I'm having twins...but she can't really tell--an ultrasound will allow more clear information.
Finally, she put the little micraphone thingy on my belly so we could hear the baby's heartbeat. No dice. She tried for 10 minutes, and found nada. She told me this is no cause for concern, the baby could just be turned a weird way or I could only be 11 wks, which means sometimes they are too small to hear their heartbeat yet. Again, an ultrasound is necessary for a clear answer.
So here's my question- why do they not have an ultrasound machine there?
Needless to say, I'm not in a very happy place today, what with all the uncertainty yet again, and no possibility for peace of mind for yet another week- which is either the last week of my first trimester, or right in the middle of my 2nd trimester. Either way, one would hope I'd at least know everything is okay at this juncture. But then again, why would everything go as planned? I should have had lower expectations upon arrival. I never learn.

Sorry, Steph. You three are in our prayers. We'll look forward to a good report next week when you have your ultrasound.
