Thanks for your kind thoughts...any ideas on how to stop the milk?

Friends,
thanks for all your thoughts and prayers during this weird time for us. It is good to know during times such as these, that we are surrounded with a family of loving friends.
To all those moms out there who did nurse or who are nursing, I need your help. I can't nurse Evie anymore. Not now, not ever. The meds. I am on are meds. that will most likely be a something I will have to take for the duration of my life. Or at least until after menopause, since sometimes that alters the body chemistry. They are also very bad for baby.
subsequently, I had to stop feeding Evie cold turkey this weekend. She is doing much better now with the bottle, but I was "pumping and dumping," thinking the stop would only be temporary. It is not.
I'm curious if any of you have any advice as to how to do this? I don't want to pump and continue to make milk, but at the same time, I need to let out the pressure. Any ideas on the best way to go about this?
Thanks,
Steph

I'm so sorry Steph. I'm glad you are OK, though. As a collecter of info that may or may not be needed in my lifetime, I remember a blog I read recommended sage tea. Check with your doctor, though. Cabbage leaves? Binding/tight stuff? Ouch.

By the time I quit nursing both times, I was down to nursing once a day so I am sure I never felt what you will feel. However, hot showers seemed to help ease some of the pain. I also expressed some just to ease some of the pressure, and just did it less and less until the milk stopped. I also wouldn't just go cold turkey, I would pump/express less and less over the course of a few days to give your milk production time to adjust. Good luck! Definitely not a fun process! And I am so glad Evie is taking the bottle okay. We've been praying for all of you.

Hi Stephanie! This is Tali, I have been keeping up with you on your blog and can not believe what all you have been through. You are definately thought of and prayed for lots in our house!

I had to stop nursing our newest little one at 2 months. And it was not fun! I would recomend a hot shower to relieve the pressure and cabbage leaves stuffed in your bra! Can life get any better! :)

I hope that you get back to feeling like yourself again so you can enjoy little Evie.

Hey Steph, praying for you guys. I agree with the other advice. Check out La Leche, they might have some ideas. I think it's usually recommended to not pump at all, to speed the process, but I think if it relieves the discomfort, do it a bit just to help, just not too much, you know. Warm showers, warm washcloths or compress will help a lot if you get engorged or a clogged duct. Watch for that, very hard, localized hot, red areas, often below your armpit. It could get infected and make you even more sick. You already have the pain meds working for you, otherwise I'd suggest taking some. So sorry you have this to deal with, keep pluggin'! Cori
